Although Un’Goro crater is a zone lower in level than Eastern Plaguelands, it’s actually a much better place to mine Thorium Ore in WoW Classic. That’s because the terrain is way easier to navigate and the respawn rate of Rich Thorium Veins and Small Thorium Veins is insanely high (at least for now); sometimes you’ll see an almost instant respawn for a Thorium vein, if not in the exact same place, in its close vicinity.
- Minimum level 55 character
- Minimum 275 mining skill
- Mining pick
- Riding skill 150 (Journeyman)
- Epic ground mount (100% speed)
- Optional: GatherMate 2 Classic addon
Where to go:
The WoW Classic Un’Goro Crater has only one major camp – Marshal’s Refuge (45, 6) – which is neutral, and usable by both Alliance and Horde players. So, if you have the FP at Marshal’s Refuge discovered, just fly there, and let that be your starting point for the mining route.
If you haven’t discovered the Marshal’s Refuge FP yet, the easiest way to get there is from Gadgetzan, Tanaris (50, 28). The entry point to Un’Goro from Tanaris, is southwest of Gadgetzan, at (27, 57).
What to do:
The Un’Goro Crater mining route is probably the simplest mining route one can follow in WoW Classic. All you have to do is simply circle the area keeping close to the edge of the zone and collect all the Rich Thorium Veins and Small Thorium Veins that you can find, as well as the occasional Truesilver Deposits and Mithril Deposits.
You can also check the insect lair at The Slithering Scar (50, 80), or the ape cave at (64, 16). Each one of these locations has several possible mineral vein spawn points. However, since the respawn rate of the Thorium veins is pretty high, you’ll probably waste time. This also goes for the Fire Plume Ridge (50, 43), the area in the middle of Un’Goro.
After one hour of mining in Un’Goro, I got the following valuables:
- Thorium Ore x 263
- Truesilver Ore x 11
- Mithril Ore x 4
- Black Vitriol x 1
- Arcane Crystal x 10
- Huge Emerald x 2
- Blue Sapphire x 3
- Star Ruby x 2
- Large Opal x 5
- Azerothian Diamond x 5
- Dense Stone x 337
I’ll have to add that I managed to gather all this while there were at least two other players mining Thorium in the area. This being said, Un’Goro Crater would seem to be the best place to gather Thorium in WoW Classic, even though it’s a zone lower in level than Winterspring, Silithus, or EPL.
The GatherMate2 addon is not really necessary for mining here. However, since it saves the location of each mineral node on your map and can save you some trouble looking for them once you reach an area where a node can spawn.
If you have a Jewelcrafter, you can prospect some of the Thorium Ore for gems and sell those. For example, Azerothian Diamonds are key reagents for many cool items, and if there’s a shortage, you may get better profits.
If you have an Alchemist, you can craft Arcanite Bars from Thorium Bars and Arcane Crystals. These are important reagents for a wide array of WoW Classic craftable items and may bring you extra profits.
