Goldthron is quite necessary for skilling up Alchemy and it’s not that easy to farm consistently in WoW Classic. That’s because most Goldthorn nodes in the open world often share a spawn with other herbs. Therefore, it can be quite expensive sometimes, or you may not even find any in the Auction House of your server.
So, rather than wasting your time following a certain herb gathering route in a zone like Arathi Highlands or Stranglethorn Vale and ending up with a bunch of other herbs and very little Goldthorn, here’s a “focused” method that will net you an average of one stack of Goldthorn within 10 minutes or less.
- Minimum level 50 character
- Minimum 170 Herbalism skill
- Stealth – optional
- The Scarlet Key (or 175 Lockpicking skill)
Note: The Scarlet Key is in a chest, in the final boss room of the Scarlet Monastery: Library wing. So, if you don’t have it, you’ll have to run a SM: Library first, to be able to open the door to the SM: Cathedral.
Where to go:
As the title suggests, you’ll be gathering Goldthorn from Scarlet Monastery, to be more specific, from the Cathedral wing. The dungeon is located in northeastern Tirisfal Glades at (84, 32). The entrance to the Cathedral wing is inside the main building, at (46.6, 30.5). Here’s how to get there as Horde or Alliance:
Horde: It’s way easier to get to SM if you play Horde, as Tirisfal Glades is a Horde-controlled zone in WoW Classic. So, if you play Horde, fly to Undercity or to the Bulwark (84, 70) in Tirisfal, and from there, go either northeast or north, until you reach the dungeon.
Alliance: The closest Alliance FP to Tirisfal Glades in WoW Classic is at Thondroril River (69, 49) in Western Plaguelands. So, if you have this FP, fly there then follow the road west into Tirisfal, turn north at the Bulwark (84, 70), and go to SM. If you don’t have this FP, you can fly to Southshore, go north to Dalaran and swim through the Fenris Isles into Trisfal Glades. The Undercity is north of Lordamere lake and the access to Tirisfal is closed on its east side. So, from the lake, the access point to Tirisfal is west of Undercity, at around (70, 7) in Silverpine Forest. Once you’re in Tirisfal, go northeast to Scarlet Monastery.
What to do:
This Goldthorn gathering method is pretty simple.
Enter the Scarlet Monastery: Cathedral, go to the Chapel Gardens area where the large fountain is, and collect the two Goldthorn nodes there. One is located in the lower area, the other in the upper area.
To get the Goldthorn node on the lower area, you might have to kill 1-2 mobs, but if your character is at least level 50, you should be able to do that with no problem. For the node at the upper area, you can CC the closest mobs to the Goldthorn node, pick the herb up, and just run out of the instance.
Once you’re out, reset the instance and repeat.
Each run shouldn’t take more than 2-3 minutes (even less if you don’t aggro any mobs, or come here with a 60+ character). Each run can grant you between 2 and 6 Goldthorn. So, after 5 runs (which will lock you out of the instance for an hour), you can end up with at least one full stack of Goldthorn.
Of course, the downside is that you’ll be locked out of all instances for an hour after 5 runs. But still, it’s around a stack of Goldthorn for 10 minutes or less.
After five SM: Cathedral runs (9 minutes) while playing a level 48 druid, I got the following herbs:
- Goldthorn x 24
- Liferoot x 9
If you have an alt with a minimum of 170 Herbalism skill, you can log it off at the SM: Cathedral entrance, and from time to time do five Goldthorn runs.
Low level herbs can be profitable at times. Similar to Stranglekelp, Goldthorn can go for at least 100g per stack at times, simply because it’s not that easy to farm in large quantities.
If you also have Alchemy, some of the more profitable potions that you can craft from it are Elixir of Greater Agility, Elixir of Greater Defense, and Lesser Stoneshield Potion.
