Zaralek Cavern doesn’t offer a super abundance of skinnable creatures compared to other zones in The Dragon Isles. Also, even though you can get Zaralek Glowspores by skinning random creatures in this area, the drop rate for this crafting reagent is rather low compared to Mining and Herbalism.
Nonetheless, here’s a fairly decent skinning spot in Zaralek Cavern so far.
Requirements:
- Dragon Isles Skinning
- At least green Skinning gear
- Bait Crafter -> Mastery 40 points
Where to go:
Fly to Loamm in Zaralek Cavern and then go to the Burning Oasis (44, 47).
What to do:
The area around the Burning Oasis and the sulfurous pools a bit southeast of it holds several skinnable creatures. These are Conflagrated Rock Cobras, Overflow Magma Serpents, Deep Krolusks, Sulfurous Vipers, Ember Shalewings, and Blistering Salewings. Kill all that you can find and skin them. Most of them drop Adamant Scales, as well as Fire-Infused Hides and Zaralek Glowspores.
Use your Elusive Creature Bait near the Burning Oasis lava pool as often as you can to summon elusive creatures for superior hides and scales. If you have 40 points trained in Bait Crafter – Mastery, you have a chance to summon an Elusive Magma Cobra which has a chance to drop an Obsidian Cobraskin. This can be sold for a few 6-7000g. The cobra can be summoned only once per day, and the cobraskin is not a 100% drop.
Loot:
After one hour of farming and skinning at the Burning Oasis area in Zaralek Cavern, I got the following valuables:
- Obsidian Cobraskin x 1
- Adamant Scales x 550
- Resilient Leather x 9
- Fire-Infused Hide x 27
- Zaralek Glowspores x 46
- Lustrous Scale Hide x 11
- Salamanther Scales x 2
- Dense Hide x 5
- Rousing Decay x 59
- Rousing Ire x 11
- Trash loot value ~760g
For this skinning session, I had green skinning gear (T5). So, if your character is equipped with blue gear, you’ll definitely get more loot. The loot and scales that you can get from these mobs aren’t of exceptional value. However, having a shot at the Obsidian Cobraskin makes it worthwhile.
The Rousing Decay was collected exclusively from the elusive creatures that I summoned via Decay-Infused Creature Bait.
If you also have 40 points in the Harvesting skinning trait, you will occasionally get Curiously-Shaped Stomachs from the skinned mobs. These typically include additional meats, fish, or enchanting materials. The loot I got from the stomachs had a rather low AH value so I vendored it all.
Tips:
The Elusive Magma Cobra is the first elusive creature that spawns at the Burning Oasis when using the Elusive Creature Bait. Thus, you can have one skinner logged at this spot and kill your cobra every day for a shot at the Obsidian Cobraskin. Also, the Elusive Magma Cobra is a pretty tough mob. Depending on your class, you may struggle with it even with 392 iLVL gear.
To improve your chances of getting an Obsidian Cobraskin drop, as well as increase the drop rate of other blue skinnable reagents, you should maximize your Perception stat on your skinning gear.
You can also use Crystalline Phials of Perception. These are BoP though, so you can only acquire them through crafting orders (at least for now).
If you have Leatherworking, crafting the green PvP gear (i.e. Obsidian Combatant stuff) can be quite profitable, depending on server.
