Most players farm Adamant Scales from the Primal Proto-Drakes near Wingrest Embassy, at the entry point to the Dragon Isles. This is indeed a fairly decent spot for this particular crafting material. However, in this post, we’re going to address a different spot, with different mobs than dragons, simply because they have a better loot table.
Requirements:
- Dragon Isles Skinning
- At least green Skinning gear
Where to go:
Fly to the Apex Observatory in The Waking Shores (23, 83), and from there, go a bit southeast, to the Apex Canopy (24, 93).
What to do:
Kill all the Muckjaw Basilisks, Lushmeadow Grazers, and Lushmeadow Stags, loot their corpses, and skin them for their Adamant Scales and Lustrous Scaled Hides. You can also get Pristine Vorquin Horns by skinning the grazers and stags.
However, the basilisks should be your priority as they also drop Basilisk Eggs. These have a fairly decent AH price (at least for now), as they’re important ingredients for boosting Cooking.
Of course, if you’re specialized as a Bait Crafter, don’t forget to use your Elusive Creature Bait with the desired infusion. By skinning the elusive beasts, you’ll get a fairly decent amount of Rousing elements.
Loot:
After one hour of grinding and skinning the vorquin and the basilisk at the Apex Canopy in the Waking Shores, I got the following valuables:
- Adamant Scales x 482
- Lustrous Scaled Hide x 20
- Exceptional Pelt x 28
- Pristine Vorquin Horns x 33
- Basilisk Egg x 140
- Flawless Proto Dragon Scale x 2
- Salamanther Scales x 2
- Rousing Decay x 37
- Green Item x 3
Gold after selling the trash loot: 440g
For this particular run, I used a character specialized as a Bait Crafter. The proto-dragon scales and salamanther scales are from some of the summoned elusive beasts. The Rousing Decay was also skinned exclusively from the elusive beasts; the creatures at the Apex Canopy do not drop Rousing Decay.
Tips:
Adamant Scales themselves aren’t expensive crafting materials, so just selling them won’t be profitable. However, if you also have Leatherworking, you can make fairly decent profits by crafting and selling the green PvP gear (i.e. Crimson Combatant’s Adamant pieces). Some of these pieces still sell for over 1000g a piece. The patterns for the Crimson Combatant’s gear can be bought from the Auction House and they’re pretty cheap.
To increase your yield of uncommon materials gathered through skinning, Perception is the key stat for your skinning gear. Therefore, get as much as possible, even if you’re using green skinning equipment. For the session above, I’ve had 143 Perception on my gear.
You can also use Crystalline Phials of Perception. These phials are BoP though, so you can only acquire them through crafting orders (at least for now).
