If you’re going to farm Icy Dragonscales in WotLK Classic, it’s always best to look for a spot with 75+ level dragonkin mobs. That’s because along with the dragonscales, you’ll get Borean Leather (not Borean Leather Scraps). There aren’t too many spots that meet these requirements, though. One of the best (if not the best) is in Sholazar Basin.
Requirements:
- Minimum 75 level character
- Minimum 395 skinning skill
- Skinning knife
Where to go:
The WotLK Classic skinning spot is in the northern part of Sholazar Basic, at The Savage Thicket (47, 27). To get to Sholazar, either fly to the Nesingwary Base Camp, or to River’s Heart, then go northeast or north, to this location.
If you don’t have any of the FPs in Sholazar Basin unlocked yet, the easiest way to get to this area is from Bor’Gorok Outpost – Horde (50, 11) or Fizzcrank Airstrip – Alliance (55, 17), in Borean Tundra. From any of these camps, just follow the road north into Sholazar.
What to do:
Once you’re at The Savage Thicket (47, 27), slay all the Primordial Drakes, loot their corpses, and skin them. You’ll get Icy Dragonscales, Borean Leather, and occasionally Arctic Fur. They also drop Chilled Meat.
The re-spawn rate of the Primordial Drakes is pretty high as there are several quests in the area. Sometimes there are other players here doing the quests and you won’t even need to kill the dragons yourself, just skin the corpses left behind by other players.
The flying drakes may sometimes be difficult to pull as they quickly fly out of range. So, in order to stack them easier, you can use your flying mount (if you have Cold Weather Flying) and body-pull them down.
Loot:
After approx. 30 minutes of grinding and skinning the Primordial Drakes at The Savage Thicket in Sholazar Basin, I got the following loot:
- Icy Dragonscale x 27
- Borean Leather x 82
- Arctic Fur x 2
- Chilled Meat x 65
- Green Item x 2
- Gold after selling the trash loot: ~20g
Tips:
In case you don’t have a level 75+ character yet, another great lower-level spot for Icy Dragonscales is in Coldarra, Borean Tundra, all around The Nexus. However, since the dragonkin mobs here are lower in level (71 – 73), you’ll get much less Borean Leather from them, and more Borean Leather Scraps, along with the dragonscales.
If you have at least 425 skill in Leatherworking and you’ve learned the pattern from your trainer, you can craft a few Icescale Leg Armor from your Icy Dragonscales, for higher profits.
