Many dungeons within the older WoW zones have bosses and mobs that can drop battle pets sought by players for their unique or strong battle abilities, or simply because they’re cool. Needless to say, these pets can be sold for nice amounts of gold. One of these old, Vanilla dungeons, is Temple of Ahn’Qiraj.
There are 3 battle pets in this raid dungeon, and here’s what you must do to get them.
Requirements:
- Minimum level 90;
- Frost spells, or a melee weapon that deals Frost damage.
Where to go:
The Temple of Ahn’Qiraj is located in southwestern Silithus. The quickest way to get there is to teleport to Ramkahen in Uldum, then use your flying mount to fly north-west, into Silithus.
There are two Ahn’Qiraj dungeons here – Ruins of Ahn’Qiraj and Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. Make sure you choose the right one. The entrance to the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj is at (46,7), in Silithus.
What to do:
Your main goal is to get the 3 rare battle pets from this dungeon: the Mini Mindslayer dropped by the first boss Prophet Skeram, the Viscidus Globule, dropped by Viscidus, and the Anubisath Idol, dropped by Emperor Vek’lor.
Skeram
Now, there’s no specific tactic for the first boss, Prophet Skeram, for a character level 90+. You just hit it a couple of times and it should die. But the other bosses that you need to kill, require specific tactics to defeat, and to make sure you can actually get loot from them.
So, as you enter the dungeon, defeat the first boss Prophet Skeram, then head down to the next lower level, the Hive Undergrounds.
Viscidus
Viscidus is located in the northeastern chamber. To defeat this boss, you must first freeze it. In order to do that, you must use Frost spells, a melee weapon that deals Frost damage, or at least a weapon imbued with an enchantment that deals Frost damage. If you play a character that doesn’t have any spells which count as Frost, use a Brunnhildar Axe, Brunnhildar Harpoon or Brunnhildar Bow, or a fast weapon enchanted with Enchant Weapon – Elemental Force, Enchant Weapon – Deathfrost, or coated with Frost Oil.
To freeze the boss, you must hit it 35 times with Frost damage. Once frozen, Viscidus must be hit at least 30 times with melee attacks within 30 seconds, in order to be shattered. Otherwise, the frost barrier will break and you’ll have to freeze it again. This might be problematic for casters. That’s why it’s best to use a melee class with a Frost damage weapon for this farm.
Vek’lor and Vek’nilash
Vek’lor and Vek’nilash are your last stop within Temple of Ahn’Qiraj. They are the twin bosses in the triangle room, at the Hive Undergrounds. Even though the Anubisath Idol is dropped by Emperor Vek’lor, you will have to defeat both. If you pull one, the other will add.
Now, what’s very important about this pull, is that you must hit each one of them at least once, before they die, to make sure they will drop any loot. That’s because if you DPS just one of them and kill him, the other one will also die. And since you’ve not touch him, it won’t drop anything. So, when you pull them, make sure you hit each one, at least once.
Also, even if you come here with a level 90 character, this fight might end up pretty difficult, because the two bosses heal each other by a lot, when kept close to one another. On top of that, it’s best to clear all the Anubisath guards in front of the chamber of these two bosses, because they will add when you pull the bosses.
So, for this fight to go smoothly, use some ranged attack on each boss, pull them in the middle, burn your CDs and AoE them quickly. This fight shouldn’t be a problem though, if you play a level 100 character.
Loot:
One run for these three Temple of Ahn’Qiraj bosses shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. On my last run with my Rogue, I managed to get all 3 pets, which actually have brought me over 7k gold, in less than 15 min. of farming.
Anubisath Idol x 1 = 3500g
Viscidus Globule x 1 = 3500g
Mini Mindslayer x 1 = 450g
Tips:
These battle pets are not 100% drop though. They only have about 10% chances to drop. To get them all, you will probably have to do an Ahn’Qiraj run every week, for a few weeks. Or, if you have 2-3 characters over level 90, you can do an Ahn’Qiraj pet run each week, with each one of them.
In order to sell them at AH, you need to learn each pet, and then put it in cage. The items that you get from the bosses, the ones that teach you the pets, are soulbound.
By raising each pet to level 25, you might considerably increase its price. Sometimes you may even be able to sell it for double the price. Here’s a way to quickly level up a pet to level 25.
For defeating Viscidus, you *cannot* use the plain “Brunnhildar Axe” as it does not inflict frost damage, you must use the “Brunnhildar Great Axe” (or the bow or harpoon). The non-great axe *does not have frost damage*.
Eh, back in the day, it used to have an “Equip: Inflicts 4 to 6 additional Frost damage per swing” proc, as far as I know. I guess they’ve changed it. Many things have changed nowadays. Also, considering that the Potion of Luck has been removed from the game, well… quite a few of the spots presented here won’t be to rewarding.
