Dragonflight Leatherworking comes with four spec trees, these being Leatherworking Discipline, Leather Armor Crafting, Mail Armor Crafting, and Primordial Leatherworking. The LW specialization trees are similar, up to a point, to the Armorsmithing trees from Blacksmithing.
So, to avoid wasting your points like many of us did at the beginning of the expansion, here’s a good way to train your firsts 95 points in Dragonflight Leatherworking.
How To Train Your First 95 Knowledge Points in Leatherworking:
- Leather Armor Crafting: +10
- Shaped Leather Armor: +30
- Wristwraps: +20
- Leatherworking Discipline: +5
- Awl Inspiring Works: +30
Analogous, if you want to craft boots first, you should go with:
- Leather Armor Crafting: +10
- Embroidered Leather Armor: +30
- Boots: +20
- Leatherworking Discipline: +5
- Awl Inspiring Works: +30
Explanation:
If you don’t want to craft a specific item for yourself, money-wise it’s best to specialize in crafting leather bracers or/and boots as a leatherworker. Thus, the two examples, above. That’s because there are currently more leather wearers than mail wearers. Also, since the raiding sets include head, hands, chest, legs, and shoulder pieces, many players will choose to craft either a pair of boots or bracers.
With your first 95 points trained like this, you should be able to craft T4 quality bracers (or boots) especially if using blue crafting gear and T3 materials.
Tips:
The build above isn’t complete, though. So, to increase your chances to craft T5 boots or bracers, it’s best to cap Leatherworking Discipline and Leather Armor Crafting (in this order). This will increase your crafting skill when crafting LW patterns as well as grant you quite a bunch of extra Inspiration.
Next, a good idea is to unlock and train Bonding and Stitching. This will improve your effectiveness when crafting profession accessories. Crafting these via crafting orders can be quite profitable.
Get blue T5 quality crafting gear even before starting to level up your Leatherworking, or at least green gear with maximum Inspiration. This way, you’ll score T5 quality on many of the green/blue gear that you’ll craft to level up. Even if they’re green or blue, they can sell for a few extra 100s of gold, so you’ll get some of your money back.
You should be able to level your Leatherworking up to 60+ without training any Knowledge Points. The recipes that you’ll learn from your trainer, and a few others from reputations, from the AH, or world drops, should be enough.
How to earn Leatherworking Knowledge Points (KP):
1. First Crafts – when you craft an LW product for the first time, you will get one Knowledge Point. This being said, it’s a good idea to purchase all the Crimson Combatant’s Leatherworking patterns from the Auction House. They’re pretty cheap, usually 50-100g each pattern. They’re 16 in number (at least for now), so that’s 16 extra KP.
2. Exceedingly Soft Skin, Ossified Hide, Molted Dragon Scales, and Preserved Animal Parts – each can be collected once per week from various creatures in the Dragon Isles. Each one grants one Leatherworking KP.
3. Decay-Infused Tanning Oil, Spare Djaradin Tools, Treated Hides, Decayed Scales, Wind-Blessed Hide, Poacher’s Pack, and Well-Danced Drum. These are one-time discoveries; they’re found in different places throughout the Dragon Isles. Each one grants 3 LW KP.
4. Notebook of Crafting Knowledge – When reaching Renown 14 and Renown 24 with the Maruuk Centaur and the Iskaara Tuskar factions. Also upon reaching level 12 with the Loamm Niffen.
5. Dragon Shard of Knowledge – quest item found in Disturbed Dirt, Expedition Scout’s Pack, or various other reward boxes. You can turn these shards in for Knowledge Points at Khadin in Ohn’Ahran Plains (51, 33). But in order to get Dragon Shards of Knowledge, you’ll have to complete the quest chain Catching Up! which starts with A Gift For Miguel and ends with A Worthy Hunt. One shard equals one point.
6. Dusty Leatherworker’s Diagrams, Rare Leatherworker’s Diagrams, Ancient Leatherworker’s Diagrams – sold by Rabul in Valdrakken (35, 59) when you reach Preferred, Respected, and Valued reputation with the Artisan’s Consortium.
7. Niffen Notebook of Leatherworking Knowledge – sold by Harlowe Marl (56, 55) at the Loamm in Zaralek Cavern.
8. Valdrakken weekly quests.
